What is ESI?

Early scent introduction (ESI) is a fun component of neonate puppy care. During the first few weeks of a puppy's life, their sense of smell is the most developed sense they have. Therefore, exposing neonate puppies to different scents in a positive and controlled manner can impact their development and future behavior.

Puppies are born with their eyes and ears closed, relying heavily on their sense of smell to navigate their environment. The olfactory system in neonate puppies is fully developed, making it the perfect time to introduce them to different scents.

Early scent introduction can help puppies develop their sense of smell and improve their ability to detect and recognize different odors.

One of the key benefits of early scent introduction is socialization. Introducing puppies to a variety of scents, including those of different people, animals, and environments, can help them become more comfortable and confident in new situations. As they grow, this can help them adjust more quickly to new surroundings, people, and other animals.

Furthermore, early scent introduction can be beneficial for future training. Dogs with a well-developed sense of smell can be trained for various activities such as tracking, hunting, and search and rescue. By exposing neonate puppies to different scents during their early development, you can help set the stage for future training and activities.

So, how are scents introduced to puppies? The first step is to choose a variety of scents that the puppies will be exposed to. These could include the scents of different people, animals, herbs, oils, etc.

Next, it's important to ensure that the scents you introduce are safe for puppies to smell. Harsh chemicals or substances that could be harmful to their health need to be avoided. Natural scents such as vanilla, lavender, or chamomile can be used to introduce pleasant and calming scents to the puppies.

To introduce the scents, a soft, clean cloth or cotton ball can be used to gently rub the scent onto before presenting it to pups. Pups will need to be supervise closely to ensure that they don't accidentally ingest the scented material.

It's important to start slowly and not overwhelm the puppies with too many new scents at once. ESI requires the introduction of one new scent a day from day 3 to 16 after birth, and monitoring and recording the puppies' reactions to ensure they are comfortable and not stressed.

Early scent introduction is a great addition to neonate puppy care. By exposing puppies to a variety of scents in a positive and controlled way, we can help them develop their sense of smell and improve their ability to navigate the world around them. As always, it's important to take a gentle and cautious approach to avoid overwhelming the puppies and to ensure their safety and comfort.

ESI is a great addition to any early socialization program to give neonate puppies the best start in life. The skills can be further developed as the pup grows  to include a variety of enrichment activities, games and puzzles. So, consider incorporating scent training into your puppy's early development – your furry friend will thank you for it!
