We all love our furry companions, but did you know that they are prone to developing orthopedic conditions? Statistics show that Bernese Mountain Dogs are one of the breeds most prone to developing orthopedic conditions like hip dysplasia. According to the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals, 32.4% of BMDs tested have evidence of hip dysplasia (1).
Hip dysplasia is a condition that affects dogs, where the hip joint fails to develop properly, causing instability and potential pain in the joint. This condition is believed to have a genetic component, but environmental factors also play a role. In this article, we will examine 5 ways you can help protect your puppy’s growing bones and joints.
Overfeeding: Giving your pup too much food can cause them to rapidly grow, which can put extra strain on their developing bones and joints. This can increase their risk of developing orthopedic conditions like hip dysplasia. One of the best things you can do for your Bernese Mountain Dog is to provide them with a healthy and balanced diet and avoid overfeeding.
Lack of exercise: A lack of exercise can lead to weak muscles, which can also put extra strain on their joints. Make sure your pup gets plenty of exercise to keep them strong and healthy. Make sure to give them plenty of opportunities to get moving, whether it's a daily walk or a romp in the backyard.
Excessive exercise: While exercise is important, too much exercise, especially at a young age, can also put extra strain on their developing bones and joints. Be sure to give them appropriate levels of exercise for their age and size. If your pup is still growing, it's important to be mindful of their exercise routine. Avoid certain agility training especially jumps, including off of furniture. Jumping before growth plates close (18-24 months) can cause long term damage.
Slippery surfaces: Walking or running on slippery surfaces can cause your pup to slip and fall, which can cause damage to their joints. Make sure your home is safe and slip-free for your pup. keeping your home slip-free can help reduce the risk of injuries that can lead to orthopedic conditions. Make sure to clean up any spills or messes, and consider investing in slip-resistant flooring if needed. Stairs can be of particular concern, consider carrying your pup up and down for as long as it is safe for you to do so and add nonslip stair treads, carpet, or coverings to any stairs your pup will have to navigate on their own.
Poor nutrition: Poor nutrition can lead to weak bones and muscles as well as, rapid and irregular growth. Ensure your pup is getting a well-balanced, healthy diet. Feed them a high-quality large or giant breed dog food with the necessary vitamins and nutrients for their size and age. Pups that receive too much energy, protein and calcium in their diet are at increased risk of developing Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD or OD) an inflammatory condition that occurs when the diseased cartilage separates from the underlying bone.
By being mindful of the environmental factors that can contribute to orthopedic conditions in Bernese Mountain Dogs, and taking steps to mitigate those risks, you can help keep your pup healthy and happy for years to come. Remember to provide them with a healthy diet, plenty of appropriate exercise, and a safe environment to play in.
