"Puppies must have a variety of positive socialization experiences BEFORE their puppy vaccination series is complete in order to develop important coping mechanisms"
Puppy Socialization
How We Raise Badass Cultured Puppies
When it comes to socializing baby puppies there are two programs that stand out above the rest, Badass Breeder and Puppy Culture. These programs have a lot of similarities and core beliefs, Their programs are both based on the understanding that early socialization is crucial to the lifelong development of dogs but each has their own technique and focus. We've combined elements from these two programs and added a few of our own elements as well, to make our program what it is today.
So why do I need a pup from a breeder with a socialization program? That's what puppy class is for isn't it?
Well, that's part of it but it's actually a little more involved. Socialization is the process of introducing your pup to new experiences in a way that builds confidence without fear and teaches them how to cope with small challenges in a positive way.
Can't I just socialize my puppy when I bring them home?
Yes! and you should! unfortunately the core socialization period for puppies is between 4-12 weeks and with puppies going to their new homes at 9 weeks old that doesn't leave much time for you to provide all the experiences your little pup may need to reach its full potential.
What's Included in Our Program
Early Neurological Stimulation
Developed by the US military this program was originally used to improve the performance of future military dogs. From day 3-16 pups undergo a few simple exercises in order to improved cardio vascular performance (heart rate); stronger heart beats; stronger adrenal glands; more tolerance to stress; and greater resistance to disease.
Early Scent Introduction
This is where we work to improve olfactory performance by taking advantage of neuroplasticity with young puppies. Each day from day 3-16 we introduce a new scent. This creates nose awareness and confidence! It's a great start for anyone planning to train their dogs in hunting, tracking, diabetic alert etc.
Sound Desensitization
As puppies develop their senses, it is important to introduce them to a variety of sounds they might encounter in their forever homes. We introduce new types of music, TV shows and movies, “noise exposure” CDs, or YouTube videos each day. We like to pay particular attention to sounds many dogs find frightening such as vacuums, traffic, fireworks, thunderstorms and more
Touch Desensitization
We handle our puppies daily from birth. Before they ever see or hear us they feel our touch and learn that we are a place of safety and comfort. As they get a little older we take it a step further with regular nail trims, daily grooming, teeth brushing and touching of paws, tails, noses etc. things your pup will likely experience during a regular vet exam
Crate Training
Puppies are mischievous by nature. Turn your back for a minute and they could be eating a sock, peeing on the floor or getting into the garbage. Crates are a great way to keep our pups safe when we can't give them our full attention. We first introduce crates at 5 weeks old. and slowly work up to closing the door for short periods of time
House Training
We initially start house training when pups are only 2 1/2 weeks old by extending the whelping box to include pee pads. Pups instinctually want to keep their beds clean and we support that by frequently cleaning their pens with enzyme products and providing them with a designated place to go. Once pups are about 6 weeks old we begin transitioning to outside potty breaks
People
We facilitate the early introduction of a variety of people. Pups will be exposed to men and women, teenagers and children in a variety of settings. From puppy sitters, friends with small children, and even strangers while shopping, we ensure all interactions are positive ones
Places
There's a lot of dangerous germs out there for unvaccinated baby puppies. We like to get creative when it comes to finding safe ways to introduce our pups to new places. We use strollers, Puppy bags, and car rides to expose our pups to the sights, sounds and smells of the outside world.
Things
We use "Things" to build confidence. Everyday we add a new piece of equipment into the pen, just an everyday item that may pose a challenge or spark some curiosity. One day we may add different types of flooring for the puppy to try walking on another day we may add some, large balls, uneven surfaces or tunnels. Each day is a new adventure
